Ten Gods in BaZi: Meanings and How to Read Them

Understand all ten BaZi relationship labels, element and polarity rules, pillar positions, and the limits of traditional family associations.

Oct 22, 2026EightFates Editorial

The Ten Gods are ten names for relationships between a BaZi Day Master and another Heavenly Stem. They are not ten deities, ten personality types, or a ranking of desirable and undesirable people. Once the Day Master is known, a stem's phase and polarity determine its category through a repeatable rule.

Five relationships come first: same phase, what the Day Master generates, what it controls, what controls it, and what generates it. Each divides into matching and opposite polarity, producing ten names. Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood. The controlling cycle is Wood to Earth to Water to Fire to Metal to Wood.

The rule and Chinese terminology follow engine/references/wuxing-tables.md. English labels match the calculator's engine output, including Hurting Officer, Seven Killings, and Rob Wealth, whose dramatic wording should not be read literally. What is BaZi? introduces the pillars and their reference stem before these additional relationships are applied.

The ten definitions at a glance

The ten relationship definitions; “same” and “opposite” compare polarity with the Day Master.
Ten GodChineseDefinition
Friend比肩Same phase as the Day Master; same polarity.
Rob Wealth劫财Same phase as the Day Master; opposite polarity.
Eating God食神Generated by the Day Master; same polarity.
Hurting Officer伤官Generated by the Day Master; opposite polarity.
Indirect Wealth偏财Controlled by the Day Master; same polarity.
Direct Wealth正财Controlled by the Day Master; opposite polarity.
Seven Killings偏官(七杀)Controls the Day Master; same polarity.
Direct Officer正官Controls the Day Master; opposite polarity.
Indirect Resource偏印Generates the Day Master; same polarity.
Direct Resource正印Generates the Day Master; opposite polarity.

Direction matters. If Wood is the Day Master, Water generates it and therefore belongs to resource; Fire is generated by it and belongs to output. Reversing the arrow reverses the family. Polarity then separates the pair without measuring intensity, goodness, closeness, or compatibility.

Friend — 比肩

Friend is another stem with the same phase and polarity as the Day Master. Jia compared with Jia is Friend, as is Ding compared with Ding. This identity of classification makes it the simplest relationship to calculate. A chart interface may label the reference stem itself Day Master rather than Friend so readers can see where the comparison begins.

Traditional interpretation associates the peer family with counterparts, shared standing, and questions of self and others. That vocabulary can support reflection about participation in a group or the difference between an individual contribution and a shared practice. It does not prove that someone has many friends, is independent, or prefers competition.

When reading a visible Friend stem, record its pillar position before adding a story. Repetition alone cannot establish that a person is self-centered or that a group will be supportive. The useful question is how the peer image relates to something already known, and whether another explanation fits better. A name describing sameness among symbols is not evidence about the quality of a human friendship.

Rob Wealth — 劫财

Rob Wealth is the same phase as the Day Master with the opposite polarity. Jia sees Yi this way, and Yi sees Jia the same way. The shared phase puts both in the peer family; the polarity distinction explains why the name differs from Friend. No money needs to be present for the relationship to exist.

Its English translation easily creates unnecessary alarm. It does not identify a thief, forecast loss, or say that another person will take your resources. Historical readings explore themes such as shared claims, participation, and competition, but these are interpretive associations rather than events contained in the calculation.

A careful example might examine how a collaborative project records contributions. The chart term could offer a cultural analogy for shared standing, while the project's actual records explain what happened. Avoid assigning the label directly to a colleague as a character judgment. Even when two people's stems produce this relationship, their conduct, agreements, and circumstances cannot be inferred from the symbols. Peer terminology is a starting vocabulary, not a verdict about trust.

Eating God — 食神

Eating God is the phase generated by the Day Master with matching polarity. Jia generates Bing, Ding generates Ji, and Ren generates Jia under this rule. The generating arrow establishes the output family, while polarity distinguishes Eating God from Hurting Officer. The category is not calculated from someone's appetite, occupation, or creative interests.

Traditional descriptions often connect output with expression, making, and what becomes available through an activity. Food imagery can make the name memorable, but it should not become a claim about health, enjoyment, talent, or an easy life. A generated phase is a symbolic relationship rather than a measurable capacity to produce something.

If Eating God appears in a chart, first note which stem carries it and where that stem sits. An interpretation about craft would still need a real example of craft. A person who does not identify with creative work has not failed to express their chart. The category can remain an accurate calculation even when a popular description feels irrelevant, because classification and personal recognition are separate questions.

Hurting Officer — 伤官

Hurting Officer is the generated phase with opposite polarity. Jia sees Ding, Geng sees Gui, and Xin sees Ren through this relationship. Like Eating God, it belongs to output. The different name marks the polarity comparison and does not by itself indicate that expression is harsher, more talented, or more difficult to manage.

The translation reflects an older technical vocabulary involving relationships among categories. It is not an accusation that someone injures an official, disrespects rules, or causes trouble. Broad discussions may use it to explore the tension between expression and established forms, but a tension in a symbolic system is not proof of behavior.

For example, revising a form to make it clearer can be described as changing an established format. Whether the revision is appropriate depends on its purpose and evidence, not on a stem label. Read Hurting Officer beside the other chart facts and resist selecting it as a complete identity. The presence of an authority category elsewhere also does not establish a guaranteed conflict; the chart contains relationships that require interpretation, not a script.

Indirect Wealth — 偏财

Indirect Wealth is the phase controlled by the Day Master with the same polarity. Wood controls Earth, so Jia sees Wu this way; Water controls Fire, so Ren sees Bing this way. The controlling direction defines the wealth family. The word “Indirect” marks one branch of that family rather than an income source that has been detected.

Traditional discussions may connect this vocabulary with resources, circulation, and engagement with material circumstances. These associations do not predict windfalls, business success, inheritance, or generosity. A chart cannot verify a bank balance or establish a person's financial skill from the presence of this category.

A grounded reflective example could consider the difference between an available resource and a resource actually used in a project. The records of the project provide the evidence. The Ten God supplies an optional analogy for thinking about the relationship to material, not instructions about investments or spending. Nor should another person's stem be treated as a resource you can exploit: the category compares symbols and does not define what anyone owes you.

Direct Wealth — 正财

Direct Wealth is the phase controlled by the Day Master with opposite polarity. Jia therefore sees Ji as Direct Wealth, while Gui sees Bing that way. It shares the same broad controlling direction as Indirect Wealth. The polarity distinction does not prove that money is earned regularly, managed carefully, or likely to arrive in a particular form.

The traditional name is often associated with concrete resources and ordinary material arrangements. Some older gendered readings also use it as a wife marker in a man's chart. Those correspondences are historical context, not a way to identify someone's spouse, determine gender, or evaluate the quality of a relationship.

Start with the category's stem and pillar location. If you then explore an example about maintaining an inventory or completing a practical task, make clear that the example comes from real circumstances. A missing visible Direct Wealth stem does not imply poverty or an absent partner. Hidden stems may add further labels, but even a complete inventory cannot justify those conclusions. The label describes a relationship within the chart, not a person's material worth.

Seven Killings — 偏官(七杀)

Seven Killings is the phase that controls the Day Master with matching polarity. Metal controls Wood, making Geng Seven Killings for Jia; Earth controls Water, making Wu the same category for Ren. The engine uses the Chinese label 偏官 and the English label Seven Killings. 七杀 is the familiar alternative Chinese name.

Despite the translation, this category does not predict killing, violence, danger, or wrongdoing. Traditional interpretation places it in the authority family and may discuss constraint, demands, or pressure. Those are broad associations that must not be turned into a safety judgment about a person or a forecast of harmful events.

A useful study exercise is to identify a constraint already present in a harmless example, such as the dimensions required for a printed page. The actual specification establishes that constraint; the chart name does not. If the label feels alarming, return to the simple phase arrow and polarity rule. No frightening biography is hidden inside the calculation, and another person's stem receiving this name does not make them a threat.

Direct Officer — 正官

Direct Officer is the phase controlling the Day Master with opposite polarity. Xin is Direct Officer for Jia, and Ren is Direct Officer for Ding. Like Seven Killings, it belongs to the authority family. The different polarity label does not make one person morally better or one form of constraint automatically more appropriate.

Traditional descriptions often connect this category with rules, recognized roles, and established standards. Older gendered conventions also treat it as a husband marker in a woman's chart. These are historical interpretive associations. They cannot identify a spouse, establish someone's conduct, or determine what kind of relationship a person should have.

A chart containing Direct Officer does not prove obedience, leadership, professional status, or a legal outcome. If a reflection concerns a standard used in a project, examine the standard directly: what does it require, who defined it, and what purpose does it serve? The Ten God may help organize that discussion, but it adds no independent evidence. An absent visible Officer stem likewise does not demonstrate a lack of responsibility, structure, or respect for others.

Indirect Resource — 偏印

Indirect Resource is the phase that generates the Day Master with matching polarity. Ren generates Jia, Yi generates Ding, and Ji generates Xin in this category. The receiving direction defines resource; matching polarity supplies the “Indirect” name. It does not establish that knowledge arrives through unconventional, secret, or supernatural means.

Historical explanations often associate the resource family with learning, support, and the conditions from which something develops. A reader may find these themes useful when examining an archive, a technique, or a source of ideas. The chart cannot prove that a teacher is helpful, that a person is intellectually gifted, or that support will appear when needed.

Keep the source and the interpretation separate. A documented reference can be checked for what it says; a symbolic resource label cannot authenticate it. Nor does Indirect Resource mean that a person's education is deficient or unusual. When the category appears in a hidden stem, it is another formal relationship within the branch, not evidence of hidden wisdom. The most useful reading remains accountable to the actual information and circumstances available.

Direct Resource — 正印

Direct Resource is the generating phase with opposite polarity. Gui is Direct Resource for Jia, Jia for Ding, and Geng for Gui. The arrow points toward the Day Master, making it a resource relationship. The opposite polarity distinguishes it from Indirect Resource without measuring the reliability, generosity, or closeness of a real source of support.

Traditional language may associate this category with instruction, protection, records, or maternal symbolism. Those associations belong to a historical framework; they are not facts about a person's parent, childhood, educational attainment, or emotional needs. A visible Resource stem cannot replace a biography, and its absence cannot establish a lack of care.

For an evidence-based reflection, examine how a particular piece of knowledge reached a project. Was it a documented procedure, a remembered example, or a source that needs checking? The actual trail answers the question. The chart's resource vocabulary can serve as a cultural comparison, but it does not validate the information or prescribe a way of learning. Reading with this distinction preserves both the formal rule and the person's lived complexity.

The same Ten God in different pillar positions

A relationship name answers “how does this stem relate to the Day Master?” Its pillar position answers a different question: “where does that stem appear in the chart?” Traditional associations often connect the year with wider background, the month with season and formative context, the day with the personal reference and day branch, and the hour with projects or later development. These are interpretive fields, not rigid age schedules.

For example, Direct Resource in a year stem and Direct Resource in an hour stem share the same formal definition. Their locations offer different contexts for a traditional discussion. Neither position proves a fact about parents, teachers, children, or events. engine/references/classical-texts.md summarizes historical pillar associations, while this guide deliberately avoids treating those associations as biographical evidence.

Hidden stems introduce further comparisons inside the branches. The same category can therefore appear more than once, and visible absence is not necessarily total absence. Even a complete list remains an inventory rather than a score. EightFates' free chart does not assign a Day Master strength rating or infer a remedy from the most frequent label.

Ten Gods FAQ

Are some Ten Gods good and others bad?

The names encode phase and polarity relationships, not moral categories. A dramatic translation is not a warning about your future, and an attractive translation is not a guarantee. Interpretations vary with context and method; none of these labels overrides real-world evidence or personal choice.

Why does the same stem have different Ten Gods in different charts?

The Day Master changes the reference. Bing is Eating God for Jia, Hurting Officer for Yi, and Direct Officer for Xin. A stem keeps its phase and polarity while its relationship to a different reference changes, just as a location can be north of one place and south of another.

Can the Ten Gods tell me who my partner is?

No. Older gendered spouse markers explain some traditional terminology, but they cannot identify a partner, determine compatibility, or evaluate a relationship. The formal categories describe chart symbols. Human relationships depend on information that those categories do not provide.

Use the free BaZi calculator to find your Day Master, then follow the chart-reading walkthrough. Each Day Master guide includes a generated ten-stem table so you can check the exact relationship before adding any reflection.
